Matakawau is translated as Headland of the Shag.

The Matakawau beachfront settlement is the largest on the Peninsula.  The settlement mainly consists of holiday baches and retirement houses.  It was subdivided between  1949 and 1960.

Due to it's missionary origins the it was previously known as the Mission block. The soils were poor and infertile, and farmers barely scratched a living of the land.
